You do know that your arguments don’t hold any water, don’t you?
Quibbling over fist versus other uses of bare hands and feet is disingenuous. The FBI reports indicate that personal weapons (hands and feet) are used more frequently in homicides than rifles. The FBI data has indicated the same thing for years.
Inflating statistics by combining homicide figures and suicide figures is fundamentally dishonest. As one who specializes in psychology, you should know that the causative factors for each are very different and the methods for addressing them are not similar at all.
As of 2017, the most recent year for which we have national data, the U.S. is experiencing an unusually low homicide rate. In fact, the average homicide rate over the 10-year period from 2008 to 2017, was the lowest of any previous 10-year period going back to the 1950s.
In addition, FBI data shows that the average use of rifles in homicides was actually nearly 21% lower for the years following the expiration of the assault weapons ban than it was when the ban was in effect.
Guns were used in slightly over half of all suicides reported the the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 2017. Over the period from 1999 to 2017, the use of firearms in suicides has been declining while the suicide rate has been increasing.
The CDC’s fatal injury report for 2017 indicates that rifles and shotguns were used in 2,864 suicides while 13,075 suicides by strangulation, hanging or suffocation were reported.
I cited the strangulation figures because suicides by those means have increased. In some states, the increase has been dramatic.
Connecticut has had red flag laws since 1999. The rate of gun suicides has fallen 7.3%. However the total suicide rate has risen 39.6%, a larger increase than the national average. The key is the rate of suffocation suicides, which has soared 113% over the 1999–2017 period.
If the net result isn’t a reduction in suicide, what is the point? Do you just not care about people who end their lives in other ways? Especially ways that can be much more painful and drawn out than a simple bullet to the temple?
Tossing suicides in with criminal acts of murder is really pretty callous.
