There are 16.3 million active concealed-carry permits in the U.S. There are 12 states that allow at least their residents to carry a concealed handgun without a permit. Among these are states with higher-than-average homicide rates but there are also states with the lowest homicide rates in America.
As noted, open carry is allowed in the majority of U.S. states. In some states, the practice is very uncommon; in other states, an openly carried handgun is not an uncommon sight, especially in rural areas.
Canada is a different country with its own laws. Americans traveling with firearms in Canada have always had to declare their guns — even American police officers. It’s not a big deal. There is a problem with criminals obtaining guns in the U.S. and smuggling them into Canada, but looking at the rate of firearm-related crime in Canada, it isn’t a huge problem. Incidentally, Canadians coming into the U.S. with firearms also have to declare them.
This article, based on nothing whatsoever, seeks to generate hysteria over some imaginary threat that doesn’t exist. It’s not the legally armed citizens that a traveler needs to be concerned about; they have a very low crime rate.
It really is time for the Chicken Littles of the U.S. to grow up.
