Good article; good advice.

Red flag laws are a problem because they are the blunt instrument that is seldom wielded well. Surprising an older person by having police show up at unusual times to collect their firearms has already been shown to have tragic results.

The mindset of the person must be carefully considered and respected. Anyone involved in the process must understand the profound negative impact this is going to have on a person who must now confront a real consequence of aging and what the person will probably see as a stark reminder of the fact society no longer considers them trustworthy and reliable.

The suicide rate among the elderly is increasing. But the use of guns to commit suicide has declined slightly. What is troubling is that the rate of suicide by suffocation and poisoning is rising much faster than the overall rate of suicide and there aren’t any red flag laws for those.
